Marina Clean

On Wednesday 4th February 2019, we carried out a marina clean at Queen Anne’s Battery as part of the University’s ‘Green Week’.

Our members removed a skip full of rubbish from the foreshore including rope, tires, wood and an entire large waste bin of recyclable plastic. With some of the waste evidently having been there for years, our team did a great job and the efforts were noticed and appreciated by berth holders at this marina. It was a very worthwhile afternoon and we are not only grateful to the members that volunteered but also to the staff of MDL Marinas who supported this operation and provided the skip. We look forward to more volunteering in the future!

Cawsands Trip

On Saturday 12th May, we took our two J80s for a day cruise over to Cawsands, we were treated to a beautiful day of sunshine and a gentle breeze, perfect for a very relaxing sail. Once moored in Cawsands, hungry sailors, barbeques and endless bags of food were ferried over to the beach. A delicious BBQ followed, and we were joined by members of UPSPC who had also sailed over. Another beautiful cruise back to Plymouth ended a very enjoyable day out with some great people.

Match racing

Plymouth yacht club sent a team of three to the RYA match racing winter event 1 in Weymouth. Neil, Ewan and Henry spent three days in an Eliot 6m, competing against some experienced teams in some very challenging conditions. After two days of very competitive racing , Plymouth managed to finish 7th overall, and only snapping one spinnaker pole! It was a throughly enjoyable event and would highly recommend this to anyone else who wants to get involved in match racing! Thanks you Neil for organising the event!

Fowey Cruise

University Yacht Club members enjoyed a weekend away in Fowey from the 27th – 29th October. Having spent the night at anchor in Plymouth Sound we set off on the Saturday morning and had a cracking sail towards Fowey. Our evening was finished off with a well deserved pub meal and a couple of pints! After a Sunday morning fry up, the boats set off on a long reach towards home. We were greeted by the University J80’s in Cawsands bay where we rafted up for our last cup of tea prior to heading back in. A wicked weekend with some great company and sailing!

Water Sports Festival

The UPSU Watersports Clubs and MGA had joined forces to give people the opportunity to try a range of amazing watersport activities, in partnership with the Mount Batten Watersports Centre. Not only were people able to have a go at a new activity they also raised money for the brilliant Derriford Children’s Cancer Service and the volunteer run watersports clubs.
