The University of Plymouth Yacht Club are proud to actively encourage sustainability and environmental awareness in what we offer.

The Green Blue University Sustainability Challenge 2017-18

This year we are proud to announce that UPYC is part of The Green Blue University Sailing Sustainability Challenge 2017. Throughout this challenge, we will be undertaking tasks associated with cleaning up our sailing area and educating our members and fellow sailors.

We are looking forward to completing the tasks and keeping you all updated about how we are learning to sail and act sustainability.

Engaging in the Green Blue, UPYC will endeavour to do the following as minimum as part of an ongoing project:

  • Ensure spill kits available where UPYC use environmentally damaging liquids both on and off the water
  • Provide members with a re-useable water bottle for all club activities, minimising waste, especially the use of single-use plastic bottles
  • Making sure boats, trailers and equipment follows the “Clean, Check, Dry” approach to minimise the risk of spreading invasive non-native species around UK waters
  • To engage in club organised beach cleans and other waterfront clean ups, engaging with other UPSU clubs and societies to achieve larger scale projects

“The Green Blue – [] – is the environmental awareness programme set up by the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine. Its mission is to promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by boating and watersports participants, as well as the sustainable operation and development of the recreational boating industry.

The Green Blue’s objective is to help boaters and boating businesses to minimise their impact on the environment by raising awareness amongst industry and users; reducing harmful discharges; reducing environmental disturbance; and encouraging sustainable choices.”
