The University of Plymouth Yacht Club are proud to offer club members the opportunity to engage in theory and practical skills training in the classroom, on the water, and at RYA training centres. Training opportunities are open to all regardless of experience.
Weekly Evening Theory Sessions
Your UPYC Committee run an extensive program of FREE weekly theory sessions throughout the academic year offering a spectrum of training. We accommodate for those working towards qualifications or wanting to further their navigational skills, as well as providing insights into yachting life e.g. sea survival. Specific theory sessions are also ran prior to participating events such as match racing.
UPYC are proud to have strong relationships with local training centres in Plymouth, allowing us to offer members reduced rate courses with help from our fantastic sponsors and club funding. Courses are ran for both theory qualifications, as well as practical, including (but not limited to):
RYA Powerboat Level II
RYA Day Skipper (theory and practical)
RYA First Aid
Learn To Sail – We’ll teach you the ropes!
UPYC are proud to have a large pool of highly experienced student skippers, many of whom are commercial yacht masters and racers. If you wish to learn how to sail, just sign up to one of our cruising sessions advertised on our Facebook group here, and let the skipper know what you’re looking for!
Dont be put off if you don’t know how to sail! One of our female skippers learnt to sail with us in Plymouth Sound and got qualified as a UPYC skipper over her first year at Plymouth. You can do it too!
